Precautions for Starting and Stopping the Engine

Whether you're riding a motorcycle or driving a car, following proper steps can extend the engine’s life and help prevent potential issues. It’s especially important to understand the role of engine cooldown after high-speed driving and the impact of revving, so you can take better care of your vehicle.

Basic Rules for Starting the Engine

When starting a cold engine, there are key points that apply to both two-wheelers and four-wheelers.

For carbureted vehicles with a manual choke, pull the choke before starting. For vehicles with an automatic choke or fuel injection, turn the key to the ON position, wait a moment, and then crank the engine without pressing the accelerator—this is the standard procedure.

On fuel-injected vehicles, wait until you no longer hear the fuel pump operating or the dashboard indicators have finished initializing before starting the engine.

Even after the engine starts, avoid revving the engine; allow the engine oil to circulate fully.
Cranking the engine while pressing the accelerator can shorten engine life and reduce starting reliability.


Precautions When Stopping the Engine and the Importance of Cooldown


In general, stopping the engine is as simple as turning the key to OFF.

However, if you've just been driving on the highway and are pulling into a service or rest area, it’s important to let the engine idle for a while to cool down before turning it off.

Turning off the engine immediately after high-speed driving can cause coolant boiling and overflow from the radiator’s reservoir tank. This is why coolant leaks are often seen in highway parking lots.

Repeated coolant overflows can lead to overheating if replenishment cannot keep up. Extra caution is needed in summer—be sure to regularly check your coolant levels.

Also, some drivers still rev the engine before shutting it down, but in modern fuel-injected vehicles, this has no benefit.

This outdated practice comes from the days of racing carburetors like Solex or Weber, where unburned fuel was used to aid engine start-up. Today, this offers no advantage and may even harm the engine.

Purpose and Impact of Engine Revving

There are two main purposes for revving the engine:

  1. To observe how the engine responds from low RPMs.

  2. To clear out fouling or carbon deposits, or to maintain high RPMs within the power band.

In both cases, the key is to monitor the combustion force from top dead center.
If the engine is frequently revved without load, it can lead to piston slap or crankshaft wear.
